Surveying St. Maarten on Addiction and Substance Use
Turning Point Foundation (TPF) and the American University of the Caribbean (AUC) team up to survey St. Maarten on the current substance use and addiction climate on the island.
Clinical staff Tyanna Knight, Psychologist and Dr. Tasheena Thomas, Senior Psychologist and Executive Director at Turning Point, joined the Billy D. Morning Show on SOS Radio today to discuss the rising addiction on St. Maarten as well as the changes in substances being used. While the indicators of the rise in substance use and addiction on the island seem very clear for caregivers of addicted persons and for professionals working in the field, there is a critical need for clear data surrounding these issues.
“This survey will tell us what substances are being used most prevalently on the island, the demographics of the individuals using those substances, and how much of the population are participating illicit substance use and are struggling with addiction.”, says Tyanna Knight.
Dr. Tasheena Thomas shared, “We urge the community to come out and participate in this survey. It is critical for us to have this data so we know exactly how to best treat our clients and how to help prepare caregivers and community partners like employers, educators, and even friends to recognize the signs of substance use and addiction and be able to get help for their loved ones.”
